Hand held portable UV module.
The original objective was to produce a unit which could be effective
in the biological cleansing of Ambulances; it has become apparent
during the trials that the module can be usefully employed in a wide
range of applications.
In actual use the module is most versatile and can be very effective in biologically cleansing cloakrooms
toilets, washing facilities room’s and maybe even hospital beds as the light output can be easily directed to
inaccessible areas.
The hand held nature of this module does introduce a new factor in the calculations necessary to achieve the applied dose and thereby the “kill rate” namely the human element, we cannot control with any accuracy the speed at which the operator moves the lantern across the surface they are disinfecting. Proper training will be necessary to ensure the modules efficacy across a range of materials and situations.
The module comprises a remote gear box in which the equipment necessary to run the single UV lamp, and the lantern which houses the 400 watt UV lamp. The lantern design means that at all times the lantern is facing away from the operator the length of the handle not only facilitates easy access to ceiling and floors but also makes it very difficult for the operator to ever look directly at the light source.
A wire screen protects the lamp. The operator has to wear a full-face visor and it is advisable to have no exposed skin if the operator is to use the device for prolonged periods.
We have the capability to increase the UV output of the module but only at the expense of portability as the weight of the control box will increase substantially,
At present calculations suggests we can achieve a 2 log reduction (i.e. 100000 down to 1000) with a dwell time of 1 second this will have to be proved in practice.
